Reigning champions off to a shaky start in Golden Nugget
As the sun shone down on the tremendous Tweedheads Bowls Club the crowd were set for a stunning start to the much loved Golden Nugget and what a start they recieved. With tantilizing matches such as Carmen Anderson playing reigning champion Jo Edwards in the womens event and mens reigning champion Steve Glasson battling it out with Sean Baker; the crowd were to witness a day of upsets to kick off the tournament.
As Steve attempts to be the first male to win back to back titles his campaign took a early blow with Sean Baker in fine form taking the match out with a comfortable win of 25 - 14 and a similar story unfolded for female defending champion Jo although having a closer match also went down to Carmen 25 - 18.
The theme of upsets continued across the green with gold coast star Lyn Cuthbertson having a dream start to dispose of Australias Delhi bound Kelsey Cottrell convincingly defeating her 25 - 8 and in the mens event another casualty for the day was no other than World Champion Safuan Said going down to New Zealand legend Gary Lawson 25 - 19.
The highlight for the day was the match up of 5 time winner Karen Murphy competing against Western Australias' Therese Hastings; with the pair playing bowl for bowl in a hard fought battle with Murphy emerging the winner 25 - 17.
